I remember Mick Kay with great affection. I never saw someone eat so many egg banjoes a day when we were in MT troop in Hong Kong. Mick also became a hero when he safely kept control of a bus full of married guys on return from their pads after the brakes failed on the notorious route twisk. Mick had a good sense of humour and married a lass he met in Ireland. He had a son and was a thoroughly decent guy. I was invited to his home in Herford many times for a home cooked meal and and a few bevvies. We both left the regiment about the same time and Mike decided to live in NI and joined the RUC.
Sadly the good die young and Mick was murdered by the IRA who set off a bomb whilst Mick was opening the gates to the car park of the RUC station. (I think it was 1979) RIP Mick and thanks!

In a year I can not remember, because I am too old, Mick and I used to drink in the squadron bar in Smuts Barracks, Berlin and pass the time away with our dreams of what we were going to do when we left 1 RTR.

I even sold him my Opel caravan after i had spent a fortune , together with Jeff Baker, replacing the engine.

We then ended up in the 'plastic pub' in Lisannelly bks, with Bob Piggin as resident host, telling each other the same stories, with the same dreams.

Years later Beaky Hempson and I sat in a pub in Northampton proposing a toast to Mick, having seen on that nights news the report of yet another IRA bomb. but this time the name was personal!

Rest in Peace my friend. :!:
