When I transfer across to the 1RTR from the Blues he was C O of the 1st.
I found him to be one of the old type of Officer. He knew his men. He same to store just a little bit so that he could recall something about you.
Another name from my past has fallen in on the Great Tank Park above.
The Royal Tank Regiment

Almighty God, whose perfect love casteth out fear, mercifully grant that thy servants of the Royal Tank Regiment may fear naught but to fall from thy favour, for his sake, in whom thou art well pleased, thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Just spoke to Jeff reference this - General "when I" Baker (known to many as wing nut) was one of the oldest surving members of the Regiment. CO in Osnatrash in about 1968 so at least 80. He stayed at our house for the Hildesheim final 1 RTR event before amalgamation.

A good CO, remember the first exercise in 1969, Soltua in Feb. The brake and clutch pedals had to be chiseled free of ice before we could start up, it was 7 weeks of chiily weather, they issued us with extra warm clothing , as a gunner I got a sleeveless leather jacket. BUT he was along side us all the time , I think he was a ex dropshort( please correct if I'm wrong) and he was responsible for making the regiment good again after being split for four years ( Aden-Hong Kong then Berlin- Catterick) sure I'm sure that if thers is any sorting out to be done upstairs he will do it.

He was a good CO and a good bloke. He never forgot your face.I remember that exercise on Soltau, severe Brass Monkey weather. At least the back decks of the Cents were warm. The Thursday morning runs were another ordeal as well. The General was also an Ex RAC Para along with the late Snowy Evans, another good bloke gone. The last time I saw him was at the amalgamation at Tidworth,he remembered me and we shared a few words.RIP
